Copdock: Collision Could Delay Drivers All Day

Suffolk Police are warning drivers to avoid the A14/A12 at Copdock in Suffolk for the rest of the day after a lorry jack-knifed this morning.

Suffolk Police and the emergency services were called at approximately 10.10am this morning, Monday 28 May, with a report that a red Mann lorry travelling southbound on the A12 junction with the A14 had jack knifed on the over bridge, causing part of its load of doors to shed on to the A14 carriageway below.

The driver of the lorry has been left shaken but uninjured.

A white Vauxhall Corsa was travelling east bound on the A14 was hit by the shedding load. It is believed the female driver of this vehicle has been taken to Ipswich hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The east and west bound carriageways of the A14 beneath the A12 over bridge have been closed together with the southbound side of the A12 over bridge whilst the emergency services deal with this incident.

Structural Engineers are attending the scene to assess damage to the bridge and repairs will be required to the bridge and crash barrier.

Recovery is required for the lorry and car and the carriageways will need to be cleared of the lorry’s shed load.

Police are anticipating that the carriageways will remain closed for the remainder of the day to allow for the recovery, repairs and clear up to take place.

Diversions have been put in place.

Drivers travelling along the A14 east and westbound are able to take the slip roads off the A14 and re-enter the road from the on slip.

Vehicles travelling out of Ipswich wishing to get onto the A12 south bound are being diverted off the A12, out of Ipswich, onto the A14 east bound and being diverted at the A137 junction at Wherstead where they can then re-enter the A14 west bound and take the off slip onto the A12 south bound.

Vehicles travelling from Colchester direction along the A12 northbound wishing to travel either west or east bound along the A14 or northbound into Ipswich will be unaffected.

Drivers are asked, if possible, to take alternative routes in order to avoid any delays to their journey.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the red Mann truck prior to the collision taking place calls should be made to Suffolk Police Roads Policing Unit at Police Headquarters on 101.
